Frequently Asked Questions

At Utah Physical Therapy Specialists, you come in as our patient and leave as our friend. We are here to be your physical therapists every time you need us!

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a medical, hands-on approach to relieving pain and restoring function. Physical therapists are medical experts in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions and work closely with physicians.

Our highly skilled physical therapists:

  • Thoroughly evaluate your condition.
  • Determine the causes of your symptoms.
  • Establish an effective treatment plan to achieve the best results.
  • Answer all of your questions to ensure your best recovery.
  • Tailor your plan to address your specific condition, needs, circumstances and goals.
  • Spend all of the time necessary to get you back to the things you enjoy.

While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, your physical therapist will use a variety of gentle hands on techniques, exercises, education, and a variety of equipment to relieve pain, restore your mobility, prevent the problem from returning and get you back to the things you enjoy.

How do I know if physical therapy will help me?
The first place to begin is a comprehensive evaluation performed by one of our highly skilled physical therapists. At the conclusion of the evaluation, your physical therapist will be able to tell you the likely source of your symptoms, outline the best program for recovery and answer any questions you have.

If you would like to have more confidence that physical therapy is the right decision for you before scheduling a full, comprehensive evaluation, we offer a free phone consultation or free in-office consultation visit with one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy.

Can I go to any physical therapy office I choose?
Yes! As a patient, you have the right to receive physical therapy anywhere you choose. Even if we are not on your plan, you can still choose us to help you, due to our unique knowledge, skills, and excellent results.
Do I need a referral from my doctor for Physical Therapy?
Each insurance has their own requirements, however, the vast majority of insurance companies DO NOT require you to have a referral to access physical therapy. Additionally, you can come directly to us for help without seeing a doctor first.
Does insurance cover physical therapy? Is it expensive?
Most insurance plans cover physical therapy. As a courtesy, our office will contact your insurance company to determine your physical therapy benefits. For more information, visit our insurance plan page and please do not hesitate to contact our office. We do offer different payment options for your convenience.

The amount you will pay for physical therapy will vary depending upon your insurance benefit. Most insurances have a deductible, co-pay or co-insurance and the specific amounts vary.

One very important fact to remember is that physical therapy, when started early, ends up saving you A LOT of money. Research indicates that the average cost savings in future medical expenses ranges from $2,700 to $4,700. We are able to save you money by helping you recover without the need for expensive MRIs, injections, medications or specialist office visits. Come see us FIRST and save money and time!

Will it hurt?
Physical therapy is not meant to hurt, but to relieve. However, as you restore your mobility, pain levels, at times can fluctuate. You might also experience some temporary soreness from using muscles that are weakened or recovering. This is a normal response to therapy treatment and will improve with treatment and time. Good communication with your therapist will help minimize any discomfort. Our goal is to provide relief and get you back to the things you enjoy!
What type of payment is accepted?
We accept cash, check, debit card, and credit card. We also offer convenient payment plan options.
What do I wear to my appointments?

Please dress comfortably in clothes that allow easy access for the therapist to examine your problem areas. Loose-fitting clothes that you can exercise in and sneakers are often a very good choice. Shorts are ideal if you are being treated for a hip, knee, or ankle condition.

How long will my therapy sessions last?
Typically, the first session lasts about 1-1.5 hours. Each session thereafter ranges from 45-90 minutes. The time will be based on your specific needs and your therapist will discuss this with you.
How many sessions will I need?
Each patient’s diagnosis is different, so together with your referring physician, your therapist will develop a plan of care that is right for you. Your plan of care and number of visits will be determined during your first visit and explained to you by your physical therapist.
What type of training and education do your therapists have?
Physical therapists have years of University level training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology (study of joint movement), neurology and many of the other medical sciences. Our physical therapists have graduated from accredited physical therapy programs and are state licensed. All of our physical therapists are Doctors of Physical Therapy. Rest assured, our physical therapists are well trained to evaluate and treat your condition. See our staff page for more details regarding your therapist’s certifications and training background.
